Studies show that brain function slows down considerably with age. I used to possess a sharp wit laced with stinging sarcasm, able to retort in the blink of an eye without pausing to think. I realized this morning just how much I've aged, just how my senses have dulled, and how my reflexes have faded.
I walked in to work this morning after trekking through a typical New Orleans rain storm. During the 100 yards of parking lot between my car and the hospital doors, I got soaked.
"Is it raining outside?" asked a hapless fool.
I tried to fire off a response, but my brain froze. Several lame responses tried to escape from my mouth, but my tongue couldn't choose between them. My brain and my eyes clouded over and all I could mutter was a pathetic "Uh... yeah."
So sad. So very, very sad.
Today I mourn the death of my quick wit.
