Emotion

When we're in the OR for surgery, fully gowned up and dressed, we call it being "scrubbed." So, when you're scrubbed, you're covered head to toe in order to eliminate any chance of bacterial contamination into the surgical wound. Sterile gowns, sterile gloves, a hat, mask, and shoe covers.

Naturally, everybody looks like a blue Zorro, and all you can see are the eyes. You learn to read people by looking at their eyes, and you also learn to express yourself without needing to speak using the slightest movement of the eyes and eyebrows.

Apparently somebody must have been offended by some eye movements recently because we noticed the posting of a flyer in every OR suite titled "Lateral Violence." This new posting contains guidelines on what is not approriate behaviour, and what actions are considered offensive and hurtful. "Lateral Violence" pertaining to the non-physical psychological mindgames people play.

The post lists twenty-some passive/aggressive behaviours, ranging from: rolling your eyes, ignoring someone or turning your back to them, inappropriate body language, blah blah blah, and biting.

Yes. Bite-ing.

It's hard to imagine that I work in a place filled with professionals with advanced degrees, and we need a memo that prohibits biting as a passive/aggressive behaviour. First of all, there's nothing passive about biting. It's all aggressive. Secondly, how is biting ever an issue with anybody who's successfully passed kindergarten? Exception of professional boxers, of course.
