General surgeons around the world universally agree that operating on the pancreas is technically difficult, labor intensive, and the post operative management of the consequences are a nightmare. The other day I overheard one of the surgical attendings describe pancreatic surgery in this way:

"God has chosen to live in the pancreas.
And he does not like it when you go cutting into his house with a scalpel."
