Serendipity

An interesting fact was mentioned during this morning's conference on the topic of hemostasis and thrombosis.  The interesting fact being that the reversal agent for heparin, protamine sulfate, is derived from salmon semen.

The source for protamine boggles my mind.  I guess God meant it to be that way, otherwise it wouldn't have been...  There must have been a thousand waypoints between salmon semen and protamine.  What really dazzles me is how scientists were able to connect those waypoints to realize that the solution to over heparinization lay in the contents of salmon semen.  I mean, who looks at salmon semen, or anyone's semen for that matter, and thinks it can have some medicinal qualities?  No wait, I don't want to know.
